Mirzapur Pital Bartan (Brass Utensils)

Brass utensils from Mirzapur are made using a craft that is nearly 200 years old. Brass is a mix of Copper (60%) and Zinc (40%), and these utensils are made by skilled artisans known as Kansaras.

How They’re Made

This is a traditional, handmade process passed down through generations:

1. Wooden Patterns & Moulds
First, artisans make a wooden pattern of the utensil. Using Ganga sand, desi sugar (Khandsari), and yellow soil (Pili Mitti), they create strong moulds that can handle molten brass.

2. Melting & Casting
The metals are melted in special handmade furnaces, and poured into the moulds. The perfect mix of copper and zinc and sometimes nickel or tin — is done by experience, not machines.

3. Shaping & Polishing
Once cooled, the utensils are shaped, joined, and polished using traditional tools. Skilled karigars make sure every joint is strong and long-lasting.
